The Problem With Self-Discipline For Artists
Hey, really hope you’re well, and thanks for opening this piece and making CM a part of supporting you creative work ✌️
I wanted to post my new video (dropped Sunday), and a list of recommended documentaries/other videos, which came along in its production. For paid subs, at the bottom of this email you’ll find the podcast and supplementary video discussion on this piece too.
Above is the video, which has been getting some pretty interesting and varied feedback in the comments 📝. I guess I knew this topic was going to be a bit divisive, and that I couldn’t really give my take on it without inviting a mixture of opinions, but I think most people respect that I’ve tried to set it up in a sensitive way and make it clear that it’s just my perspective (and others are invited and available).
Recommended documentaries/other videos on creative practice
I found and enjoyed a load of other work on the creative practice whilst making this, and I wanted to offer them here for anyone looking to dig into a documentary on the creative process. Maybe you’ve watched these before? If not, let me know if you take a look and enjoy any of them.
Three documentaries/videos on game development that inspired the piece:
I’m not a massive gamer myself, but I love the depth of creative work that goes into games and the passion of the people behind them. Below are three windows into that world, which inspired a section of the video on self-discipline.
Making South Park (in a week):
I loved this one because it shows what a small and focused team can do, when they are all driven towards getting something done (and quick).
Jacob Collier on Making Djesse Vol 1, 2 & 3:

I use a piece of the Tape Notes interview with Collier in the video. I really like the approach of this podcast, digging into the mind of the musician and how they make creative choices. Collier is a pretty unique talent, and valuable and inspiration perspective on what he does.
Cheers to all reading, and hope you find something you enjoy in the above.
